De kracht van de mond

Als je de tentoonstelling Say Cheese in Museum Boerhaave bezoekt, is het net alsof je een grote mond in loopt. De muren geven een zachte, rode gloed. Boven je hoofd lijkt het dak een beetje op een gehemelte. En in de hoek hangen glazen speekseldruppels.
Omdat mensen vroeger niet precies wisten waarom ze zulke slechte gebitten hadden, bedachten ze ook de vreemdste middeltjes om hun tanden weer gezond te krijgen. In een recept voor een middeltje tegen tandpijn uit 1680, staat dat je je eigen plas met peper moet mengen. Dat mengsel moet je dan op je wang wrijven. Ook worden bier en wijn vaak gebruikt als mondwater. Pas later gingen mensen hun tanden poetsen. Dat was in het begin vooral iets voor rijke mensen, die dure borstels en tandmiddeltjes konden betalen.
In de tentoonstelling kan je zo'n bijzondere tandenborstel zien. Vroeger was hij van de Franse keizer Napoleon Bonaparte, maar nu ligt hij veilig achter glas op een rood kussentje. De tandenborstel is van zilver en heeft een borsteltje van echt paardenhaar. Op de steel staat een mooie hoofdletter N gegraveerd. Napoleon gebruikte geen tandpasta, maar een soort tandpoeder gemaakt van opium en koraal. Waarschijnlijk heeft Napoleon deze tandenborstel niet echt gebruikt. Daar was hij natuurlijk veel te mooi voor!
