The treasures of the first emperors of ancient China. The world famous warriors and hundreds of other artefacts from the Qin and Han dynasties, many never before seen outside China.
Where the legacy of the Chinese culture and our legacy from the former church area of the museum come together, we display this remarkable collection in a world of its own, seen through totally transparent cloths. Just as the emperors, with their Terracotta army, created their own world within a world during their time.
Visitors are offered a perfect view of the statues from a bridge which has been constructed specifically for this purpose. The magnificent colours, which the statues originally had, have now floated down as pigments which can be seen in the glass show cases, displayed on a base of wood blackened by fire. Colours that form a base for the light used.
Due to this mystical army from Xi’an, the emperor, who had been searching his whole life to find an elixir which would give him eternal life, has in fact become immortal to us.
The Drents Museum won the 1st Price of the Artifex Award 2009 with ‘The Terracotta Army of Xi’an’.
